American Flamingo

Article

January 18, 2022

The American flamingo (Phenicopterus ruber) is a species of flamingo closely related to the great flamingo and the Chilean flamingo. It was formerly considered a species with the Great Flamingo, but the classification is now considered (e.g. by the American and British Union of Ornithologists') to be inaccurate due to lack of evidence. It has also been known as the Caribbean Flamingo, but the 'species' presence in the Galápagos makes that name questionable. It is the only species of flamingo that lives naturally in North America.
