Kyōto Animation (京都アニメーション, Kyōto Animēshon), commonly abbreviated as KyoAni (京アニ, KyoAni), is an anime production studio based in Uji City, Kyōto Prefecture, Japan. The company was born in 1981 and officially became a limited liability company in 1985 before moving to a corporation form in 1999. The director is Hatta Hideaki, the company is also affiliated with a notable film studio. another idea is Sunrise and established a subsidiary Animation Do in Osaka. Some famous anime series produced by Kyoto Animation can be mentioned as Clannad, K-On!, Hyōka, Nichijou, Tamako Market, Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon, Violet Evergarden,... or some movies such as Sound Shape, Suzumiya Haruhi no Shōshitsu,...
One of the company's founders was Hatta Yoko, she was initially recruited into Mushi Production, but quickly left the studio and moved to Kyoto after marrying Hatta Hideaki. Kyoto Animation was founded in 1981 by this couple, the position in the company is chaired by Hideaki and Yoko is the vice president.
It was a limited liability company in 1985 and later became an official corporation in 1999. Kyoto Animation's logo is based on the kanji kyō (京), the initials of Kyoto Animation.
Since 2009, Kyoto Animation started holding the Kyoto Animation Awards which include three categories: original novel, manga and screenplay. The winning works will be published through the company's KA Esuma Bunko imprint, and the work may receive the opportunity to be adapted into an anime. Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions, Free!, Kyoukai no Kanata and Musaigen no Phantom World are all novels that received honorary prizes in this competition. In 2014, Violet Evergarden became the first and only work to receive the grand prize.
Animation Do Co., Ltd. (株式会社アニメーションドゥウ, Kabushiki-gaisha Animēshon Dū) is a company affiliated with Kyoto Animation founded in 2000 to assist the studio in production. The company became a limited liability company in 2000 and entered a joint stock company in 2010. The company is run by Hatta Hideaki in tandem with Kyoto Animation. On September 16, 2020, Animation Do was officially merged with Kyoto Animation.
Fire in 2019
On July 18, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. local time, a 41-year-old man carrying a knife and 40 liters of gasoline entered Kyoto Animation's studio 1 on fire. The fire destroyed more than half of the studio and many other items and seriously injured many people. According to the Kyoto Police Department, at least 34 people were killed and 36 others were seriously injured, including many important Kyoto Animation directors. The suspect was later injured and taken to the hospital. This is the most serious attempted murder since the Heisei era in Japan. This incident caused many of its products and projects to be postponed or canceled indefinitely.
