Science (from Latin scientia, literally "wisdom") is the gathering of resources to increase knowledge, and the organized part of knowledge that is contained in its methods. The origins of science can be traced back to Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia from about 3500 to 3000 BCE. Their contributions to mathematics, astronomy, and medicine overshadowed the philosophy of the ancient Greeks.

Branches of Science

Modern science is divided into three branches; natural sciences (e.g., biology, chemistry, and physics), the study of the things around us; the social sciences (e.g., economics, psychology, and sociology), the study of individuals and societies; and the formal sciences (e.g., logic, mathematics, and theoretical computer science), which are divided into abstract concepts. However, there is an argument as to whether formal sciences are really science because they are not supported by empirical evidence. Some disciplines that use existing scientific knowledge for practical purposes, such as engineering and medicine, are called applied sciences.
