Wikimedia Commons (English: Wikimedia Commons, also known as Commons) is a place where free and open pictures, sounds, and other multimedia files are stored. It is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation. Uploaded files of Wikimedia Commons resources can be used in other Wiki projects, including Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikinews, etc. As of 2018, Wikimedia Commons has more than 44 million multimedia files.

File usage

Files uploaded to Wikimedia Commons can be used in other Wiki projects. The name of the file is the same as the file name listed when uploading. The file with the same file name in the project itself will be used first, otherwise the file from Wikimedia Commons will be used. Graphics and image files accept GIF, JPEG, TIFF, PNG and XCF formats, and it is recommended that images that meet certain conditions be converted into SVG vector files. Audio files only accept Ogg, Oga and MID formats; video files only accept Ogv and WebM formats; document files only accept PDF and DjVu formats.

History

Wikimedia Commons resources began to be promoted in March 2004 and launched on September 7, 2004. In November 2004, the uploaded files reached a milestone of 100,000, including more than 10,000 copies of public domain works. The original purpose of establishing Wikimedia Commons was to reduce the effort required for repetitive sorting. Since October 2004, Wikipedia has been able to use Wikimedia Commons resources in articles. In September 2016, 33,593,504 freely available files have been uploaded. Wikimedia Commons is the first Wikimedia project to use Mediawiki 1.4.

Language

The main language is English. Registered users can change the language of the interface in the parameter setting; some pages have been translated into other languages. However, most of the dialogue discussion pages are still in English.

Copyright

Wikimedia Commons absolutely does not allow the uploading of files without free copyright, including authorization conditions such as prohibition of commercial use, fair use, prohibition of modification and creation of derivative works, etc. Files that are allowed to upload include GFDL, creative commons (only by or sa, nc, nd prohibited), and public domains.
